# Nonprofit 990 Search
Look up a US nonprofit by name or EIN and get a limited snapshot from its IRS
Form 990 record: legal name, EIN, sector, most recent revenue with the fiscal
year it came from, latest filing year, and a link to the full filing.
Free, no signup. Published by WIZE, the AI fundraising platform for nonprofit
development teams: https://app.wizenow.com/tools/990/
## What you get, and what you don't
- **Mission text is not available and is always `null`.** The filing index
exposes IRS Business Master File records and financial extracts; an
organization's mission statement is written on the Form 990 itself (Part I,
line 1). Open the linked filing to read it. WIZE does not guess a mission from
an organization's name or classification, and neither should you.
- **Paper-only filers are reported as such.** An organization whose returns were
not e-filed has no machine-readable financial extract, so `filings_available`
is `"paper_only"`, any revenue figure comes from the IRS master file rather
than a specific return, and `revenue_source` says so.
- **A broadened search returns candidates, not an answer.** If the exact phrasing
finds nothing, the tool retries once with a simplified query — and then returns
the match list with `simplified_query` set and NO snapshot, because a broadened
search can surface a different organization entirely. Confirm which one you
meant, then call again with its EIN.
- **"The index is unreachable" is never reported as "no such nonprofit."** An
upstream failure returns an `upstream_unavailable` error, not an empty result.
Data comes from ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, which republishes IRS Form 990
data. WIZE returns a limited snapshot and links to the full record.

Inputs:
- `ein` — an EIN. Preferred: it is the only form that guarantees the right
organization.
- `query` — an organization name, or an EIN in any common format. For a name,
use the one or two most distinctive words; "Foundation", "Trust", state names
and punctuation make matches worse, not better.
